Reading the key concepts in media studies, I learned that all media texts are re-presentations of reality. This means that media texts are written form the writers perspective and therefore influenced by his/her opinion. This is not a bad thing as long as the reader understands this and keeps a critical mind to what he reads. Without the media our perception of reality would be very limited. It’s better to know a view of reality than no view.
Another thing I learned is that media is often selective in what they present. An example could be a documentary about animals that most live in zoos, but say there are a lot of that kind of specie. So when watching or reading the media it is important to observe what they focus on because that might have a big influence.
I also learned that some media hide unpleasant things and focus on pleasant things usually in political situations to get the reader a good perception about the situation. This is often used by dictators that want to hide the bad things they do by only telling the good things.
So it is a good idea to think and question what you read. This can be done by thinking of who wrote it?, What is not mentioned in the text? And who is represented in the text?
